Silk Road Top

The Silk Road Top began with damaged and forgotten garments recovered from school lost and found, reconstructed into a silhouette inspired by the traditional Japanese kimono.

Across the piece, panels of one of my Nani's Kashmiri embroidered shawls is worked into the discarded material. The embroidery connects the garment to my own heritage. My Nani is from Kashmir, but the kimono-inspired silhouette draws from a completely different tradition.

That meeting is where the name Silk Road comes from. Historically, the Silk Road connected distant cultures through the movement of textiles, craft, and ideas. This piece plays with that same idea: different traditions meeting within a single garment.

Paired with the Silk Road Pant, the set is about what can happen when materials and the stories they carry are allowed to travel somewhere they weren't meant to be.
